ARTIFACT IN FOCUS

Pvt. George R. Rome’s Personal New Testament

Rome was born in 1835 to free African American parents. In 1863, he became one of nearly 180,000 African American soldiers to enlist in the Union Army. He received this Bible, which was a source of strength to him throughout the war, and which he also used as a makeshift diary. It symbolizes the close connection soldiers often made between their faith and the war.
